Is life sending you more lemons than you care to have? Are you looking around and seeing problem after problem and wondering when it will end?
You’ve heard the saying, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” meaning make the most out of your situation. I also see it more as, when you come across a challenging situation, focus on the solution rather than the problem.
It’s easy to look at the car wreck, the stack of bills, the broken appliances, the laundry list of things you need to get accomplished and get stuck in the thought process that keeps you saying to yourself, “how am I going to get out of this mess?” or “why does all this sh*t always happen to me?” When we stay stuck in that negative thought process we just keep spinning the same thoughts around and never find the solutions to get out of our problems. I get it. The situation may not be something that comes to mind immediately, or can be fixed in a day, a week, or even a month or more. But your thoughts can change in an instant. How you show up in your life and think about your challenges and look for solutions, makes all the difference.
The first step in changing your thoughts is to turn around the negative thought to a positive thought. While I get it may not seem truthful to you at the time, you are training your brain to think different thoughts and when you can think differently, you feel differently and then act differently. For example, if you are hearing yourself say things like, “I always have this crap happening to me”, “I’m so unlucky”, or “I don’t know how I’m going to get out of this situation” turn those thoughts around to “I know I can turn my life around”, “I’m in the process of learning to think differently so I will have different outcomes”, “I am in the process of figuring out a solution to __________ and I know it will come to me”.
If you are really struggling to find a solution to your problem, step two is to try writing down a few ideas about how you might go about it. Nothing is off limits. Just start writing, even if it’s a crazy idea out there or doesn’t seem possible. Don’t judge your solution, just write. Once you have a list of ideas in front of you, consider which top 3 ideas you are willing to try first. If the first 3 don’t work, continue to go through the list and keep trying your ideas. The solution is IN you! Don’t be surprised if one of your “crazy” ideas is the one that works.
Allow yourself some grace to know that it may take time to get to find a solution to everything you may be experiencing. Most of the time these challenges in our lives didn’t happen in an instant, and while you can create a new thought in an instant, have patience when it comes to getting to the resolution. When you are focused on the solutions rather than the problems the answer will come.
